In early stage novel coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) disease-2019 (COVID-19) is characterized by cough, sore throat, fever and fatigue. On later stage, viral replication and ‘cytokine storm’leads to high levels of proinflammatory cytokines such as tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-2, IL-6, granulocyte-colony stimulating factor and several chemokines that results in severe pneumonia and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). [1] Till date there is no specific treatment is available to treat COVID-19. As a preventive and supportive therapy, curcumin, is one of the natural compounds that had been widely investigated for its antiviral activity. Curcumin commonly known as turmeric, is the most popular in India and used as culinary spice and has some religious implication since, 4000 years back to the Vedic culture. The medicinal uses of curcumin has been found in Sanskrit medical treatises, Ayurvedic and Unani systems. [2] Turmeric Milk (powdered turmeric in boiled milk), also known as golden milk is well known home remedy to cure cough and related respiratory ailments in India. Research has revealed that curcumin has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, chemopreventive and chemotherapeutic activity.
